Starting in the latter part of the 20th century, farming changed due to increased mechanization and the dominance of larger, more specialized operations, leading to declining populations, fewer farms, and diminished economic activity in small towns. Left behind were abandoned buildings of many small farms and main street businesses. Following the population decline, a number of railroads pulled up the tracks serving these rural areas. Nevertheless, small towns have survived throughout the state thanks to the loyalty of their residents.
